Kijimuta

Kijimuta, according to Okinawan folklore, is a type of small, hairy forest spirit or kiju (tree spirit). They are often depicted as being childlike in size and mischievous in nature. Kijimuta are believed to dwell within the hollows and roots of old trees, particularly banyan trees (Gajumaru).

While generally not considered malevolent, Kijimuta are known for playing pranks on humans. These pranks might include hiding objects, making strange noises, or even leading people astray in the forest. It is said that Kijimuta have a particular fondness for playing pranks on people with unclean homes.

Offerings of food and drink, especially rice cakes and sake, are sometimes left at the base of trees in Okinawa to appease the Kijimuta and ensure good fortune. Respect for the natural world and the spirits that inhabit it is a central tenet of Okinawan culture, and the Kijimuta represent an important aspect of this belief system. While belief in Kijimuta may be waning in modern times, they remain a significant part of Okinawan folklore and are often featured in stories, art, and local festivals.
