Democratic Party (Central Lithuania)

The Democratic Party (Polish: Partia Demokratyczna), also sometimes referred to as the Democratic Union, was a Polish political party active in Central Lithuania during its brief existence from 1920 to 1922. Central Lithuania, officially the Republic of Central Lithuania, was a short-lived puppet state created in 1920 by Polish General Lucjan Żeligowski on the territory of present-day Lithuania and Belarus, following a staged mutiny within the Polish Army.

The Democratic Party represented a broad coalition of moderate and liberal elements within the Polish community of Central Lithuania. It generally advocated for self-governance for the region within a broader federal structure, likely linked to Poland, though specific policy positions evolved during the party's existence. Unlike more radical nationalist factions, it sought a more inclusive approach, appealing to various ethnic groups present in the territory, including Lithuanians, Belarusians, and Jews, though its base remained primarily Polish. The party participated in the elections to the Sejm (parliament) of Central Lithuania in 1922.

Following the annexation of Central Lithuania by Poland in 1922, the Democratic Party ceased to exist as a separate political entity. Its members likely joined various other political organizations operating within Poland. Due to the short duration of Central Lithuania's existence and the subsequent Polish government's policies, detailed historical records about the Democratic Party are relatively scarce.
