1973 U.S. Open (golf)
The 1973 U.S. Open was the 73rd U.S. Open, held June 14-18 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, a suburb northeast of Pittsburgh. Johnny Miller won his first major championship, shooting a final-round 63, which was a U.S. Open record for lowest round that stood for 43 years.
The tournament was marked by difficult playing conditions due to the challenging Oakmont course. Prior to Miller's final round, no player had broken 70 in the tournament. Miller started the final round six strokes behind the leaders, John Schlee, Julius Boros, and Jack Nicklaus. His 63 included nine birdies and no bogeys.
Schlee finished one stroke behind Miller, and Nicklaus finished in a tie for fourth. The victory was Miller's second of the year on the PGA Tour; he won a total of four times in 1973. It solidified his position as one of the top players in the world at that time.
