French frigate Sérieuse (1779)
The Sérieuse was a 32-gun Magicienne-class frigate of the French Navy, launched in 1779. She participated in several naval battles during the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolutionary Wars.
Service History:
Commissioned in 1779, Sérieuse initially served in the fleet of Admiral d'Estaing during the American Revolutionary War. She participated in the Battle of Grenada in July 1779. She later served under other commanders in various theaters of operation in the Caribbean and off the American coast.
During the French Revolutionary Wars, Sérieuse was part of the French fleet stationed in the Mediterranean. Her most notable action occurred during the Battle of the Nile on August 1, 1798.
Fate:
At the Battle of the Nile, Sérieuse, commanded by Captain Claude-Jean Martin Trulet, was initially positioned in the French line of battle but was eventually forced to strike her colours after heavy damage from British ships. After surrendering, she was deemed irreparable due to the extent of her damage. Sérieuse was eventually sunk by the British to prevent her recapture by the French. Her wreck lies at the bottom of Aboukir Bay, near Alexandria, Egypt.
