Richard Southwell (died 1514)

Richard Southwell (died 1514) was an English landowner and courtier during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII. He was a prominent figure in Norfolk society and held various offices within the county.

Southwell's parentage is somewhat unclear, with some sources identifying him as the son of John Southwell of Barham Hall, Suffolk, and others suggesting different family connections. He established himself at Woodrising, Norfolk, acquiring land and influence in the region.

He served as Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1498 and again in 1503. He was also a Justice of the Peace for Norfolk. Southwell was closely associated with the royal court and held the position of Escheator for Norfolk and Suffolk. His position brought him into contact with important figures of the time and allowed him to accumulate considerable wealth.

Southwell married Alice Cornwaleys, daughter of Sir John Cornwaleys of Brome, Suffolk. The couple had several children, including Sir Richard Southwell (c. 1504-1564), who became a significant figure in the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII.

Richard Southwell died in 1514. His will reveals insights into his land holdings and family affairs. He left behind a substantial estate, which was inherited by his son, further solidifying the Southwell family's position in Norfolk. His legacy lies primarily in the advancement of his family's fortunes and his contributions to local administration.
