Frank Evans (bullfighter)
Frank Evans (born 1942, Lancashire, England) is a British former bullfighter, considered to be the first and one of the few Englishmen to achieve recognition and success as a matador in Spain.
Evans was inspired by Spanish culture and bullfighting from a young age. He moved to Spain and began his training, initially facing considerable prejudice and skepticism from the Spanish bullfighting establishment. He persevered, working his way up through the ranks of novice bullfighters (becerristas) and eventually taking his alternativa (the ceremony where a novice becomes a fully qualified matador) in 1965 in Barcelona.
While never reaching the very top echelon of bullfighting stars, Evans earned respect for his bravery, skill, and dedication. He fought regularly throughout Spain and achieved some notable successes, including several important performances in major bullrings. He became known for his elegant style and his commitment to the traditions of bullfighting.
Evans retired from bullfighting in the 1980s. He has remained a respected figure within the bullfighting community and has occasionally made appearances at bullfighting events. He has also been involved in promoting bullfighting and sharing his experiences through documentaries and interviews. His career is significant for being a rare example of a foreigner succeeding in a traditionally Spanish art form.
