Pa Kalan
Pa Kalan refers to a traditional Iban longhouse leader or headman in Sarawak, Malaysia. The term embodies a position of respect and authority within the Iban community, responsible for maintaining order, mediating disputes, and representing the longhouse in external affairs. The "Pa" prefix is a common Iban honorific, indicating respect for an elder or leader. The role of a Pa Kalan is typically earned through a combination of experience, wisdom, and community standing, rather than necessarily being hereditary. Their responsibilities include ensuring the welfare of the longhouse residents, upholding customary laws (adat), and organizing communal activities such as farming and celebrations. The Pa Kalan works in consultation with other elders and members of the longhouse to make decisions that affect the community.
