She Loves Me Not (1934 film)

She Loves Me Not is a pre-Code comedy film released in 1934, directed by Elliott Nugent, and starring Bing Crosby, Miriam Hopkins, and Kitty Carlisle. The film is based on the 1933 novel of the same name by Edward Hope, which was also adapted into a successful Broadway play.

The plot revolves around Paul Lawton (Crosby), a Princeton college student who inadvertently becomes entangled in a murder case when he hides a burlesque dancer, Mignonette "Midge" Miller (Hopkins), who is a witness. Midge needs to escape a dangerous situation involving a nightclub owner and a dead body. Paul's efforts to conceal her within the confines of the all-male university lead to a series of comedic misunderstandings and romantic complications.

The film is notable for its lighthearted tone, the performances of its leads, and its pre-Code era sensibilities, featuring suggestive humor and situations that would become less common after the enforcement of the Production Code in the mid-1930s. Crosby's musical talents are also showcased, with several song performances integrated into the narrative. She Loves Me Not was a box office success and helped to solidify Crosby's career as a leading man in Hollywood. It was remade in 1941 as True to the Army, with Jerry Colonna taking on the Crosby role.
