Nishiki (bicycle company)
Nishiki was a brand of bicycles designed, specified, marketed and warranted by West Coast Cycle in the United States, and subsequently manufactured by Kawamura Cycle Co. in Japan. Nishiki bikes were primarily produced from the early 1970s until around 2001, encompassing a wide range of models from entry-level road bikes and mountain bikes to higher-end racing bicycles.
West Coast Cycle was a major bicycle distributor in the U.S. The Nishiki brand distinguished itself through its focus on Japanese manufacturing quality and competitive pricing, particularly in the burgeoning bicycle boom of the 1970s.
Key features of Nishiki bicycles often included Tange Champion tubing frames, Shimano components, and distinctive paint schemes. Model names often reflected their intended use or level of quality, with names like "Olympic," "International," "Continental," and "Alien."
Following the decline of American bicycle manufacturing and the rise of global competition, West Coast Cycle eventually ceased operations. The Nishiki trademark was acquired and applied to bicycles manufactured by other companies, though generally not with the same level of quality or brand recognition as the original Japanese-made models. Consequently, vintage Nishiki bicycles manufactured by Kawamura remain sought after by collectors and cycling enthusiasts. The brand still exists, though its current offerings are primarily entry-level bicycles sold through sporting goods retailers.
