Gandalf (American band)

Gandalf was an American psychedelic rock band formed in 1967 in New York City. The group, initially known as The Rahgoos, consisted of Peter Sando (vocals, guitar), Bob Muller (keyboards), Frank Hubach (bass), and Davy Bauer (drums). They signed to Capitol Records and released their self-titled debut album, Gandalf, in 1969.

The album is considered a cult classic of the psychedelic rock genre, notable for its heavy use of studio effects and its blend of hard rock, folk, and Middle Eastern influences. It features cover versions of songs by other artists, including "Golden Earrings" (originally by The Golden Earring) and "Hang On to a Dream" (originally by Tim Hardin), alongside original compositions.

Despite critical acclaim, Gandalf was not commercially successful upon its initial release. The band members eventually pursued other musical projects. However, the album gained a following over the years, becoming a sought-after collectible and being reissued on CD and vinyl. The band's music has continued to be appreciated by fans of psychedelic rock and collectors of obscure vintage albums. The Gandalf album is seen as a prime example of late 1960's psychedelic studio experimentation.
