Utin (castle)

Utin refers to a ruined medieval castle located in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic. Situated on a prominent basalt hill overlooking the Bílina valley, the castle's strategic position controlled an important trade route. The castle's name is derived from the nearby village also called Utin.

The history of Utin Castle dates back to the 13th century, with the first documented mention occurring in 1276. Built by the lords of Rýzmburk (also known as Ronovci), it served as an administrative and defensive center for their holdings in the area. Throughout its history, the castle changed hands several times, belonging to various noble families, including the Donín family and the Vartenberk family.

Like many castles in the region, Utin's importance diminished over time, and it was gradually abandoned. By the 16th century, the castle was already in a state of decay. The ruins consist primarily of the remains of the perimeter walls, the gate tower, and fragments of residential buildings.

Today, the ruins of Utin Castle are a protected cultural monument and a popular tourist destination. While much of the original structure is gone, the remaining walls offer a glimpse into the castle's former grandeur and its significance in the medieval landscape of Bohemia. Archaeological investigations have provided insights into the castle's construction, layout, and the daily life of its inhabitants. Although not extensively researched, the castle holds value for local history and regional heritage.
