Novgorod electoral district (Russian Constituent Assembly election, 1917)
The Novgorod electoral district was one of the constituencies created for the 1917 Russian Constituent Assembly election. The district covered the Novgorod Governorate. According to pre-election reports, the Socialist-Revolutionaries (SRs) were the dominant political force in the area, having strong influence amongst the peasantry. The Bolsheviks also had a presence.
The election in the Novgorod Governorate saw the Socialist-Revolutionaries emerge as the clear winners, securing a majority of the votes. However, the precise vote totals and seat allocation are subject to some discrepancies in historical sources, stemming from the incomplete and often chaotic nature of the vote tabulation process during that period. The main contenders beyond the SRs were the Bolsheviks. Other political parties, such as the Constitutional Democrats (Kadets) and Mensheviks, obtained more limited support within the Novgorod electoral district.
The results reflected the broader national trend of SR dominance in rural areas, although the Bolsheviks were making significant inroads, particularly in urban centers and amongst soldiers. The election in Novgorod, like elsewhere in Russia, was rendered moot following the Bolshevik dissolution of the Constituent Assembly in January 1918.
