Max Cryer
Max Cryer, ONZM (born John Maxwell Cryer, 14 May 1935) is a New Zealand author, broadcaster, entertainer, and media personality.
Cryer is best known for his extensive knowledge of language and trivia, and for his long-running career in New Zealand television and radio. He has written numerous books on language, idioms, and popular culture, often focusing on the origins and meanings of words and phrases.
Cryer was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and attended Auckland Grammar School. He began his career in radio before transitioning to television, where he became a familiar face on shows such as "Top Town" and "University Challenge". His expertise in language and trivia led to frequent appearances on panel shows and quiz programmes.
Beyond his media work, Cryer is also an accomplished pianist and singer. He has performed in a variety of musical settings and has a deep appreciation for music and the performing arts.
In the 2003 Queen's Birthday Honours, Cryer was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to entertainment. He continues to be a respected and well-known figure in New Zealand media and culture.
