Melville (crater)
Melville is a lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon. It is located to the southeast of the Mare Ingenii, in a relatively level area between the outer ramparts of the much larger craters Thomson to the northwest and Poincaré to the east-southeast. To the southwest of Melville is the slightly smaller crater Skafte.
This is a relatively unremarkable, bowl-shaped crater with a somewhat eroded outer rim. The interior slopes are generally featureless, and slope down to a small, level floor. The floor is roughly circular and has no significant features of its own. The crater is named after Herman Melville, the American novelist.
