Hamrštejn
Hamrštejn is the name of a ruined castle located in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic, near the town of Křižany. It stands on a basalt cliff overlooking the Ještěd ridge and the Lusatian Mountains.
The castle was likely founded in the 13th century, though the exact year is unknown. Its primary function was to guard a trade route leading to Lusatia. Hamrštejn has a history involving various noble families, including the Ronovci family, who are believed to be among its earliest owners. Over the centuries, ownership changed hands numerous times, reflecting the political instability and shifting power dynamics of the region.
Hamrštejn suffered significant damage during the Hussite Wars in the 15th century. Although partially rebuilt, it was eventually abandoned in the 17th century, gradually falling into ruin.
Today, only remnants of the castle walls, towers, and other structures remain. The site is a popular destination for hikers and tourists interested in exploring historical landmarks and enjoying the surrounding natural scenery. Preservation efforts are ongoing to maintain the remaining ruins and prevent further deterioration. The castle ruin is freely accessible.
