Viewtiful Joe (video game)

Viewtiful Joe is a cel-shaded side-scrolling beat 'em up video game developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom. It was originally released for the GameCube in 2003 and later ported to the PlayStation 2 in 2004.

The game centers around Joe, an avid movie enthusiast who is transported into Movieland by his favorite action hero, Captain Blue. When Movieland is invaded by evil forces, Captain Blue bestows upon Joe the V-Watch, which grants him the power to transform into Viewtiful Joe, a tokusatsu-inspired superhero.

As Viewtiful Joe, players navigate various stages, battling enemies and solving puzzles using special VFX powers: Slow, Mach Speed, and Zoom. These powers manipulate time and perspective, allowing Joe to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies in creative ways. Slow slows down time, allowing Joe to dodge attacks and deal extra damage. Mach Speed allows Joe to perform rapid punches and kicks, leaving behind afterimages. Zoom allows Joe to zoom in and perform a powerful attack, like a heat wave-inducing punch or a lightning strike.

The game features a distinctive visual style characterized by its cel-shaded graphics, dynamic camera angles, and over-the-top action sequences. The gameplay emphasizes skill-based combat and encourages experimentation with the VFX powers to discover new strategies.

Viewtiful Joe received critical acclaim for its innovative gameplay mechanics, unique visual style, and challenging difficulty. It spawned several sequels and spin-offs, including Viewtiful Joe 2, Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble, and Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble!. It is considered a cult classic and a notable example of Clover Studio's distinctive game development philosophy.
