John Kearney (soldier)

John Kearney was an Irish-born soldier in the United States Army who served during the American Civil War. He is primarily known for receiving the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia, on October 19, 1864.

Kearney served as a Private in Company C of the 137th Pennsylvania Infantry. During the battle, while serving as one of a picket detail, he distinguished himself by his courage and tenacity in holding his position despite being heavily outnumbered and under intense fire. His actions contributed to delaying the Confederate advance and allowing time for Union forces to reorganize.

The specific citation for his Medal of Honor reads: "Capture of flag of 6th South Carolina Regiment (C.S.A.)" This indicates that, in addition to his defensive actions, Kearney also played a key role in actively capturing a Confederate battle flag, a significant feat of bravery in close combat.
