Gorytos

A gorytos (Ancient Greek: γωρυτός) was a combined bowcase and quiver used by the ancient Scythians, Persians, and other nomadic and equestrian peoples of the Eurasian Steppe. It served as a protective container for both the bow and arrows, shielding them from the elements and damage.

The gorytos was typically constructed from leather, often decorated with elaborate ornamentation. It consisted of two main compartments: one for the bow, and a narrower, longer compartment for the arrows. The bow compartment was usually positioned to allow the bow to be drawn quickly. The arrow compartment was designed to hold a substantial number of arrows, often with the arrowheads facing upwards for ease of retrieval.

The gorytos was an essential piece of equipment for mounted archers, allowing them to carry and protect their weaponry while on horseback. The design enabled quick access to both the bow and arrows, crucial for effective combat tactics employed by these cultures.

Archaeological finds of gorytoi, or representations of them in art, provide valuable insights into the weaponry, craftsmanship, and cultural practices of these ancient peoples. The materials used, the construction techniques, and the decorative motifs all offer clues to their technological capabilities, artistic sensibilities, and social structures.
