Ohbijou
Ohbijou was a Canadian indie pop band formed in Toronto, Ontario in 2004. Characterized by its chamber pop arrangements and featuring multiple vocalists and instrumentalists, the band incorporated elements of folk, pop, and classical music into their sound.
Ohbijou's core members consisted of Casey Mecija (vocals, guitar, keys), James Bunton (drums, banjo), Heather Kirby (bass), Anissa Hart (cello), and Jenny Mecija (violin, vocals). Over time, the lineup also included other musicians who contributed to their recordings and live performances.
The band released three full-length albums: Swift Feet for Troubling Times (2006), Beacons (2009), and Metal Meets (2011). Their music explored themes of identity, community, and social justice, often drawing inspiration from the members' personal experiences and backgrounds.
Ohbijou gained recognition within the Canadian indie music scene and toured extensively across Canada and internationally. They received nominations for the Polaris Music Prize longlist for both Beacons and Metal Meets.
The band officially disbanded in 2013, citing the members' desires to pursue different artistic and personal paths. Despite their relatively short career, Ohbijou left a lasting impact on the Canadian indie music landscape and are remembered for their unique sound and socially conscious lyrics.
