Mateo Falcone (opera)
Mateo Falcone is an opera in one act by César Cui, composed in 1907 and premiered in 1907 in Moscow. The libretto, by Cui himself, is based on the novella Mateo Falcone by Prosper Mérimée. The opera is considered a notable example of Russian lyrical opera, although it is relatively short.
The opera follows the plot of Mérimée's story closely. It is set in Corsica and centers on Mateo Falcone, a man known for his honor and marksmanship. The story revolves around his ten-year-old son, Fortunato, who betrays a fugitive to the authorities in exchange for a watch. When Mateo learns of his son's betrayal and the violation of Corsican hospitality (which demands protection of those who seek it), he executes his own son as punishment, restoring his family's honor.
The opera features a relatively small cast and a simple, direct musical style designed to emphasize the dramatic tension of the story. Key characters include Mateo Falcone, his wife Giuseppa, and their son Fortunato. The sergeant and Gianetto Sanpiero (the fugitive) also play crucial roles. Cui's score is characterized by its use of folk-inspired melodies and a restrained orchestral palette. The opera explores themes of honor, betrayal, justice, and parental duty.
