Hornsby (crater)
Hornsby is a lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon. It is located to the southwest of the prominent crater Von Karman, within the immense South Pole-Aitken basin.
Hornsby is a relatively well-defined crater, with a somewhat eroded outer rim. The inner walls slope down to a relatively flat interior floor. There is a small, rounded central peak located near the midpoint of the crater floor. A few smaller craterlets lie along the rim and inner walls, but the crater is largely free of significant impacts.
The surrounding terrain is heavily cratered and rugged, typical of the far side of the Moon. Due to its location on the far side, Hornsby is never visible directly from Earth.
The crater is named after Thomas Hornsby (1733-1810), an English astronomer and Astronomer Royal.
