Deadly Nightshade (film)
Deadly Nightshade is a 1953 British crime film directed by John Gilling and starring Emrys Jones, Moira Lister, and Zena Marshall. The film is a low-budget thriller centered around a London doctor, Dr. Robert Manson (Emrys Jones), who becomes embroiled in a blackmail plot after a chance encounter with a glamorous but dangerous woman, Stella (Moira Lister).
The plot thickens as Dr. Manson finds himself increasingly entangled in Stella's web of deceit and criminal activity. He struggles to maintain his professional integrity and protect himself from the escalating danger posed by the blackmailers and Stella's manipulative machinations. Zena Marshall plays a key supporting role, adding to the film's atmosphere of suspense and intrigue.
Deadly Nightshade is considered a classic example of British "quota quickie" filmmaking from the era. These were films produced on tight budgets and schedules to fulfill requirements for British cinemas to screen a certain quota of British-made films. While often criticized for their low production values, some of these films, including Deadly Nightshade, have gained a cult following for their gritty realism and engaging narratives.
