Passage (dressage)

Passage in dressage is a collected gait, a highly developed and refined form of trot. It is characterized by an extreme elevation of the forelegs and a suspension phase where all four legs are briefly off the ground, creating a floating or “dancing” appearance. Unlike a simple collected trot, the passage has a noticeably slower tempo and a greater degree of suspension, resulting in a more expressive and elegant movement. The horse's hind legs are engaged powerfully and drive the movement from behind, providing the impulsion that supports the exceptional elevation of the forehand. The transitions into and out of passage require precision and control from the rider. A successful passage demonstrates a high level of training and harmony between horse and rider, showcasing the horse's suppleness, balance, and strength. The ability to perform passage is a hallmark of advanced dressage training and is a requirement at higher levels of competition. The development of passage requires considerable time and careful training to avoid placing undue strain on the horse's joints and muscles.
