The Four Musketeers (1934 film)

The Four Musketeers is a 1934 American action-adventure film directed by Rowland V. Lee and starring Walter Abel, Raymond Massey, Heather Angel, and Jane Wyatt. It is an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel The Three Musketeers, although the title implies an equal focus on all four protagonists.

The film follows the adventures of D'Artagnan, a young man who travels to Paris to join the King's musketeers. He quickly befriends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, and together they become embroiled in court intrigues and fight to protect the honor of the Queen of France, Anne of Austria, from the machinations of Cardinal Richelieu and the seductive Milady de Winter.

While considered a generally faithful adaptation of the source material for its time, the film condenses the plot and streamlines some characters for brevity. It is notable for its action sequences and swashbuckling style, typical of Hollywood adventure films of the 1930s. It should be noted the title may be slightly misleading as the original title of the Alexandre Dumas story it is based on is actually The Three Musketeers.
