Horatius Bonar
Horatius Bonar (1808-1889) was a Scottish clergyman, hymnwriter, and poet. Born in Edinburgh, he was a prominent figure in the Free Church of Scotland, emerging after the Disruption of 1843. He ministered for many years at Kelso and later at the Chalmers Memorial Free Church in Edinburgh.
Bonar was known for his evangelical preaching and his prolific writing. He authored numerous books of theology, devotion, and poetry. However, he is best remembered for his hymns, which are characterized by their simplicity, theological depth, and focus on the love and grace of God.
Some of Bonar's most well-known hymns include "I Lay My Sins on Jesus," "Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face," "Fill Thou My Life, O Lord My God," "A Few More Years Shall Roll," and "Rejoice, Rejoice, Believers." His hymns continue to be sung and appreciated in churches around the world. He also edited several hymn collections, contributing significantly to the hymnody of the 19th century.
Bonar's writings and hymns reflect his deep personal faith and his desire to communicate the gospel message clearly and effectively. His work has had a lasting impact on Christian worship and devotional life. He died in Edinburgh in 1889.
