Zababa

Zababa was a Mesopotamian war god, primarily associated with the city of Kish. In Sumerian mythology, he was a relatively minor deity, often considered a tutelary or local god. However, in later Akkadian periods, his importance grew, and he was often identified with Ninurta.

His attributes and functions were those of a warrior god, embodying strength and martial prowess. He was invoked for success in battle and protection from enemies. While specific myths centering solely on Zababa are scarce, he appears in lists of deities and is mentioned in inscriptions related to temple dedications and royal power.

His cult center was in Kish, where a temple, E-meteursag, was dedicated to him. The temple's name translates to "House that lifts terror," reflecting Zababa's warrior aspect. Kings frequently invoked Zababa in their inscriptions, seeking his blessing and associating themselves with his strength to legitimize their rule. He was also sometimes associated with agriculture, likely due to his later identification with Ninurta, a god with strong agricultural ties.
