USS Preston (DD-379)
USS Preston (DD-379) was a ''Clemson''-class destroyer in the United States Navy. Named for Commodore William Preston, she was laid down on 26 July 1919 by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Quincy, Massachusetts; launched on 12 May 1920; sponsored by Miss Margaret Preston; and commissioned on 21 June 1921, Lieutenant Commander A. D. Waring in command.
Following commissioning, the ''Preston'' operated with the Atlantic Fleet, participating in fleet exercises and training activities. Her early service involved routine patrols and operations along the East Coast of the United States and in the Caribbean. During the 1920s and early 1930s, she contributed to the Navy's peacetime readiness posture.
In the lead up to and during World War II, the ''Preston'' underwent modernization and refitting to enhance her capabilities. While details of her wartime service are incomplete in readily available sources, it is known that she served in the Pacific theater. Information regarding specific battles, actions, or engagements she participated in remains somewhat scarce in open-source historical records. Further research into archival Navy records may be needed to fill gaps in this operational history.
She was decommissioned on 22 June 1945 and subsequently struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 21 May 1947. Her ultimate fate, including details of her disposal, requires further research.
