Hoggett

A hoggett (sometimes spelled hogget) is a term used in sheep farming to describe a young sheep, typically between approximately one and two years old. Specifically, it refers to a sheep that has its first fleece of wool after its lamb's fleece. The term is most commonly used in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

The designation "hoggett" helps farmers differentiate between different age classes of sheep for purposes of management, breeding, and marketing. A sheep ceases to be a hoggett once it reaches approximately two years old or when it has been shorn for the second time. After this point, it is generally referred to as a ewe (female) or ram (male) depending on its sex. The wool shorn from a hoggett is sometimes called "hoggett fleece" and can be of a higher quality than that from older sheep.
