Locris

Locris was a region in ancient Greece, inhabited by two distinct groups: the Opuntian Locrians and the Ozolian Locrians. These groups, while sharing a common name, were geographically separated and maintained distinct identities throughout antiquity.

  • Opuntian Locris: This region was located on the coast of mainland Greece, facing the island of Euboea. Its principal city was Opus. The Opuntian Locrians were considered part of East Locris. Their territory included a fertile coastal plain and was relatively prosperous compared to their western counterparts. They participated in various Greek leagues and conflicts.

  • Ozolian Locris: Situated to the west of Phocis and bordering Aetolia, Ozolian Locris was a more rugged and less fertile area. Its principal city was Amphissa. Separated from Opuntian Locris by Phocis and Doris, the Ozolian Locrians were considered part of West Locris. They were often viewed as more rustic and less integrated into the mainstream of Greek civilization. Their territory was known for its mountainous terrain and forests. They claimed descent from Locrian colonists led by Ozolus.

The differences in geography and resources contributed significantly to the distinct identities of the Opuntian and Ozolian Locrians. While they occasionally acted in concert on certain matters, they generally operated as separate political entities. Both Locrian groups eventually came under Macedonian and later Roman influence. The region of Locris declined in importance during the Roman period.
