Inverness (provincial electoral district)

Inverness was a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada. It existed intermittently from 1867 to 2013. The district represented the county of Inverness on Cape Breton Island.

History:

The riding was first created in 1867, coinciding with Canadian Confederation and the first provincial election. The boundaries of the district evolved over time, reflecting population shifts and electoral boundary reviews. It sometimes elected one member to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly and at other times elected two members. Throughout its history, the riding has been represented by members of various political parties, including the Liberal, Conservative, and Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) parties.

Significant boundary realignments occurred periodically, impacting the communities included within the Inverness electoral district. The name and general geographic location remained consistent, but specific communities were added or removed to balance population numbers with other districts.

In 2012, an electoral boundaries commission recommended significant changes to Nova Scotia's electoral map. As a result, the Inverness riding was abolished in 2013 and replaced by the new electoral districts of Inverness and Richmond.
