Everhood
Everhood is an independently developed role-playing rhythm game created by Foreign Gnomes, a development team consisting of Chris Nordgren and Jordi Roca. Released in 2021, the game is known for its unique blend of exploration, puzzle-solving, and challenging, music-based battles.
The game's story follows a wooden doll whose arm is stolen by a blue gnome. The doll, initially without a name and referred to by players as Red, embarks on a quest to retrieve the missing limb. This journey leads Red through a bizarre and often surreal world filled with eccentric characters, cryptic prophecies, and unexpected twists.
Gameplay in Everhood deviates from traditional RPG combat systems. Instead of turn-based or real-time attacks, battles are resolved through rhythm-based challenges. The player controls Red as they stand on five lanes, and must hit corresponding buttons to deflect incoming notes that move across the screen in time with the music. Success in these battles requires precise timing and pattern recognition.
The game is notable for its psychedelic visuals, atmospheric soundtrack, and philosophical themes that explore concepts such as identity, purpose, and the nature of reality. The narrative often breaks the fourth wall, addressing the player directly and encouraging them to question their choices and actions within the game world. Everhood received generally positive reviews, praised for its originality, distinctive art style, and engaging gameplay mechanics.
