Birds of Prey (2020 film)
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), often shortened to Birds of Prey, is a 2020 American superhero film based on the DC Comics team of the same name. It is the eighth film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson. It stars Margot Robbie, reprising her role as Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad (2016), alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Ella Jay Basco, and Ewan McGregor.
The plot follows Harley Quinn after her breakup with the Joker. She joins forces with Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to save Cassandra Cain from Gotham City crime lord Roman Sionis, also known as Black Mask.
Birds of Prey is notable for its nonlinear narrative, hyper-stylized violence, and themes of female empowerment and independence. The film was released in theaters on February 7, 2020, and received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its action sequences, visual style, and performances, particularly Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn. However, it underperformed at the box office compared to other DCEU films, leading to speculation about its marketing and title.
