James Macfarlane (Tasmanian politician)

James Macfarlane (1844 – 11 May 1935) was a Scottish-born Australian merchant and politician in Tasmania.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Macfarlane emigrated to Tasmania in 1876. He entered business as a merchant and shipowner, becoming a prominent figure in Hobart's commercial community. He was a partner in the firm of Macfarlane Brothers & Co.

Macfarlane was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly for the electorate of Fingal in 1886, serving until 1893. He then served in the Tasmanian Legislative Council representing the Pembroke constituency from 1897 until his retirement in 1931.

Throughout his political career, Macfarlane was known for his conservative views and his support for business interests. He held various committee positions and contributed to debates on topics ranging from land management to public works. He was a strong advocate for developing Tasmania's natural resources.

Macfarlane died in Hobart in 1935 at the age of 90.
