Jack Paar

Jack Paar (May 1, 1918 – January 27, 2004) was an American author, comedian, radio and television personality best known for hosting The Tonight Show from 1957 to 1962.

Paar's tenure on The Tonight Show is credited with revolutionizing the late-night talk show format. He transformed it from a news and entertainment program to a more personality-driven show, emphasizing conversation, improvisation, and a personal connection with the audience. He often spoke openly about his own life and opinions, which was considered groundbreaking for the time.

Before taking over The Tonight Show from Steve Allen, Paar worked as a radio announcer, a comedian in the Borscht Belt, and a supporting actor in films.

During his time as host, Paar introduced a number of notable personalities to American audiences, including Jonathan Winters, Bill Cosby, and Phyllis Diller. He also cultivated a devoted following due to his quick wit, sometimes controversial opinions, and willingness to push boundaries.

One of the most famous incidents of Paar's career occurred in 1960 when he walked off The Tonight Show after NBC censors removed a mildly risqué joke from his monologue. He returned several weeks later, famously declaring, "As I was saying before I was interrupted..."

After leaving The Tonight Show, Paar hosted The Jack Paar Program from 1962 to 1965, also on NBC. This show allowed him more freedom and control over the content. He later hosted a short-lived talk show in 1973 on ABC.

Paar authored several books, including autobiographies detailing his life and career. He is remembered as a pivotal figure in the history of television and a significant influence on subsequent late-night talk show hosts.
