Slit drum

A slit drum (also known as a log drum, teponaztli (in Nahuatl), or tongue drum) is a percussion instrument consisting of a hollow resonating chamber with one or more slits cut into its surface. The sound is produced by striking the area between the slits with a beater, producing a distinct tone for each section.

Unlike drums that use a membrane stretched across a frame, a slit drum's sound is generated from the vibration of the instrument's solid body. Historically, slit drums have been made from wood, though modern versions can be made from other materials like metal or synthetic compounds.

The instrument's resonance is dependent upon the size and shape of the chamber, as well as the dimensions and placement of the slits. Different lengths and thicknesses of the 'tongues' created by the slits produce varied pitches, allowing for a melodic range, although this range is generally limited.

Slit drums have been used for centuries in various cultures around the world, often serving as a means of long-distance communication, ritualistic expression, or musical accompaniment. Different cultures have developed distinct playing techniques and tunings specific to their needs and traditions. Some cultures believe slit drums possess spiritual power.

Modern variations of the slit drum are often used in musical education, therapy, and contemporary music production due to their relatively simple construction, ease of play, and soothing tonal qualities.
