River Torne (England)

The River Torne is a river in England, flowing through South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. It rises near Tickhill in South Yorkshire and flows generally north-east, eventually joining the River Trent near Keadby in Lincolnshire.

The river's course has been significantly altered over time, both naturally and through human intervention. Originally, it flowed northwards into the River Don, but it was diverted to flow into the Trent as part of land drainage schemes aimed at improving agricultural land. Evidence suggests that this diversion occurred in the 17th century, though precise dating is difficult.

The Torne drains a relatively flat, low-lying area, much of which is reclaimed marshland. The surrounding landscape is primarily agricultural, with arable farming being dominant.

Water quality in the River Torne has historically been a concern due to agricultural runoff and industrial discharge. However, efforts have been made to improve water quality through various initiatives.

Tributaries of the River Torne include the River Ryton and the Mattersey Drain. The river is crossed by several bridges and culverts along its course. The Torne is not generally considered a navigable waterway.
