Zenica is a city located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated in the Zenica-Doboj Canton. It is the administrative center of the canton and one of the largest cities in the country. Zenica is located in the valley of the Bosna River, approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of Sarajevo.

History: Zenica has a long and rich history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to prehistoric times. During Roman times, the area was known as Bistua Nova. The name "Zenica" is believed to be derived from the Slavic word "dzen," meaning "day." The city's strategic location along the Bosna River contributed to its importance throughout various periods of history. It experienced periods of rule under the Bosnian Kingdom, the Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary.

Economy: Historically, Zenica was a major industrial center, particularly known for its iron and steel production. The city's economy was heavily reliant on the "ArcelorMittal Zenica" steel plant. Following the Bosnian War (1992-1995), the city has undergone economic restructuring and diversification, although the steel industry remains a significant employer. Other sectors include mining, metal processing, and construction.

Culture and Education: Zenica is home to several cultural institutions, including the Zenica City Museum and the Zenica National Theatre. The city also hosts the Zenica Summer Fest, an annual cultural event featuring music, theatre, and other performances. Higher education is provided by the University of Zenica, which offers a range of academic programs.

Demographics: Zenica's population is diverse, consisting primarily of Bosniaks, with significant Croat and Serb minorities. The Bosnian War significantly altered the demographic makeup of the city.

Infrastructure: Zenica is well-connected to other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina via road and rail networks. The European route E73 passes near the city. Public transportation within Zenica includes buses and taxis.

Notable Features: The Vranduk fortress, located near Zenica, is a medieval fortress that played an important role in the defense of the Bosnian Kingdom. The city is also surrounded by hills and mountains, offering opportunities for outdoor recreation.
