John Allen (physician)

John Allen (1770 – 1839) was a Scottish physician and political and historical writer. He is most known for his scholarship related to classical history and political theory.

Born in Edinburgh, Allen studied medicine and graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1791. He served as a physician in the Royal Navy before becoming private physician to Lord Holland. This position provided him with both financial security and the freedom to pursue his scholarly interests. He resided at Holland House for many years.

Allen was a staunch advocate of Whig political principles and a close associate of prominent Whig politicians and intellectuals. He contributed articles on political and philosophical topics to publications like the Edinburgh Review.

His most significant work is An Inquiry into the Rise and Growth of the Royal Prerogative in England (1830). This book examined the historical development of the English monarchy and argued for limitations on royal power. It remains a notable contribution to constitutional history.

Allen's other writings include contributions to historical and political debates. He was a respected figure in intellectual circles and known for his extensive knowledge and rigorous analysis.
