Mala Brda
Mala Brda is a geographical area in Montenegro, translating to "Small Hills" in English. It is a microregion within the larger Brda (Hills) region of the country. Historically, Mala Brda, along with the other Brda areas (Piperi, Bratonožići, Kuči, and Vasojevići), held a degree of autonomy from both the Ottoman Empire and later, the Montenegrin state, preserving a unique cultural and social identity.
Mala Brda typically refers to the area inhabited primarily by the Kuči tribe, although the exact boundaries can sometimes be debated. The Kuči historically were known for their fierce independence and tribal structure.
While not a formally defined administrative unit in modern Montenegro, the term "Mala Brda" remains in use to refer to this specific geographical and cultural area. Its significance lies primarily in its historical and ethnographic importance, reflecting the tribal organization and historical development of Montenegro. The area is characterised by mountainous terrain and a relatively rural population.
