Arlanza (DO)

The Arlanza Denominación de Origen (DO) is a Spanish wine region located in the autonomous community of Castile and León. It straddles the provinces of Burgos and Palencia, encompassing a broad area within the valleys of the Arlanza River and its tributaries.

The DO was officially recognized in 2007, though the region has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the Middle Ages. Arlanza's climate is continental, characterized by cold winters, hot, dry summers, and significant temperature variations between day and night. These conditions, combined with the area's diverse soils (predominantly limestone, clay, and sand), contribute to the distinctive character of its wines.

The principal grape variety authorized for red wines is Tempranillo, which must constitute at least 50% of the blend. Other permitted red varieties include Garnacha, Mencía, and Cabernet Sauvignon. A small amount of white wine production is also permitted, primarily using the Albillo Mayor grape.

Arlanza wines are typically known for their bright acidity, fruity aromas (often red and black fruit), and moderate tannins. Red wines can range from young, unoaked wines to those that have undergone aging in oak barrels, imparting more complex flavors and aromas. The wines generally offer a good balance of fruit, acidity, and structure, making them versatile for food pairing.
