Mohammad-Ali Najafi (governor)
Mohammad-Ali Najafi is an Iranian politician and mathematician. He served as the Mayor of Tehran from 2017 to 2018. Prior to that, he held various government positions, including Minister of Education under President Hassan Rouhani from 2013 to 2017. He resigned from the position of Minister of Education due to health reasons and disagreements over educational policy.
Najafi holds a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Before entering politics, he was a university professor.
In 2019, Najafi was arrested and convicted of the murder of his wife. The case received significant national and international attention. After initial sentencing, he was eventually pardoned by the victim's family.
