Ioxilan

Ioxilan is a non-ionic iodinated contrast medium used in medical imaging. It is administered to patients to enhance the visibility of internal organs and tissues during X-ray, computed tomography (CT) scans, and angiography. Ioxilan is a triiodinated benzene derivative and its presence increases the attenuation of X-rays, creating a clearer image.

Ioxilan is primarily used for vascular imaging (angiography and venography), CT scans of the abdomen, pelvis, and head, and urography (imaging of the urinary tract). The contrast agent can be administered intravenously, intra-arterially, or directly into the organ being imaged.

As with all contrast agents, there are potential side effects associated with Ioxilan. These can include mild reactions such as nausea, vomiting, and skin rashes. More severe reactions, such as anaphylaxis and contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN), are also possible, though rare. Patients with pre-existing kidney disease, diabetes, or allergies to iodine-containing substances are at a higher risk of developing adverse reactions. Careful patient screening and hydration are essential to minimize these risks.
