William Hancock (ophthalmologist)

William Hancock (1784 – 1861) was a British surgeon and ophthalmologist. Born in Exeter, he is primarily remembered for his contributions to ophthalmic surgery, particularly in the areas of cataract and glaucoma treatment. He was a key figure in the development of more refined and effective surgical techniques during the early 19th century.

Hancock initially trained in general surgery before specializing in ophthalmology. He became Surgeon to the Royal Westminster Ophthalmic Hospital (later Moorfields Eye Hospital), a prominent institution for eye care in London. His work at the hospital allowed him to observe and treat a large number of patients, contributing to his expertise and the development of his surgical approaches.

Hancock advocated for early surgical intervention in cases of cataract, challenging the prevailing conservative views of the time. He developed and popularized a method of cataract extraction known as "flap extraction," which involved creating a corneal flap to remove the cataractous lens. He also contributed to the understanding and treatment of glaucoma, emphasizing the importance of reducing intraocular pressure.

Hancock's published works, including articles in medical journals and textbooks, helped disseminate his knowledge and surgical techniques to other practitioners. He was a respected figure in the medical community and played a significant role in the advancement of ophthalmic surgery in Britain.
