Bolków
Bolków is a town in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in southwestern Poland. It is the administrative seat of Gmina Bolków and lies approximately 15 kilometres (9 mi) west of Jawor and 76 kilometres (47 mi) west of the regional capital Wrocław. As of December 2021, the town has a population of 5,146.
The town is historically known for Bolków Castle, a prominent medieval castle overlooking the town. Built in the 13th century by Duke Bolko I the Strict, it served as a defensive stronghold and residence. The castle is one of the largest in Lower Silesia and a significant tourist attraction.
Bolków has a long history, dating back to the medieval period. It was part of Silesia, which changed hands between various powers over the centuries, including Poland, Bohemia, Austria, and Prussia (later Germany). After World War II, Bolków became part of Poland.
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, small businesses, and tourism, with the castle and surrounding natural landscapes attracting visitors. Bolków hosts the Castle Party, one of the largest gothic rock festivals in Europe, which takes place annually at Bolków Castle.
