Tanoli

The Tanoli (also spelled Tanawali, Tunawali) are a Pashtun tribe primarily found in the Hazara region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Their traditional homeland is known as Tanawal, encompassing areas in the present-day Abbottabad and Mansehra districts. Historically, the Tanoli held a relatively autonomous position due to the mountainous terrain and the strong tribal structure.

The Tanoli claim descent from the Ghilzai Pashtuns. They are divided into several sub-tribes and clans, each with its own leaders and territories. Prominent Tanoli families have played significant roles in the political and social landscape of Hazara.

Historically, the Tanoli were known for their martial traditions and resistance to external rule, including the Sikh Empire in the 19th century. They maintained a degree of independence until the arrival of the British, who gradually incorporated the area into British India. The Nawabs of Amb, a princely state within Tanawal, were particularly influential figures.

The Tanoli primarily speak Hindko, a dialect of Punjabi, although Pashto is also spoken among some members of the tribe, reflecting their Pashtun heritage. They are predominantly Sunni Muslims. Agriculture is a significant part of their economy, alongside other occupations and professions. Over time, many Tanoli have migrated to other parts of Pakistan and abroad for better opportunities.
