NGC 523
NGC 523 is a lenticular galaxy located approximately 275 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. It was discovered on August 13, 1828, by John Herschel.
NGC 523 is classified as an SB0 galaxy, indicating that it is a barred lenticular galaxy. Lenticular galaxies are intermediate between spiral and elliptical galaxies, possessing a disk but lacking prominent spiral arms. The "SB" designation indicates the presence of a bar structure in the galactic nucleus.
While relatively faint, NGC 523 is a notable deep-sky object for astronomical observers. It can be a challenging target for smaller telescopes but is observable with moderate-sized instruments under dark skies. Its faintness stems from its great distance from Earth.
Little is specifically known about the internal dynamics and composition of NGC 523 beyond its morphological classification. Further spectroscopic and photometric observations would be needed to determine its stellar population, star formation history (if any), and the nature of its central region.
