USS Los Angeles (ID-1470)

The USS Los Angeles (ID-1470) was a United States Navy transport ship that served briefly following World War I. Originally the German passenger liner Grosser Kurfürst built by F. Schichau of Danzig, Germany, in 1913, she was seized by the United States government when America entered World War I in 1917.

Initially, Grosser Kurfürst was interned in New York harbor. After being taken over by the US Navy, she was renamed USS Los Angeles and assigned the identification number ID-1470. Her primary role was to transport troops from the United States to Europe, assisting in the buildup of the American Expeditionary Forces. She made several transatlantic voyages in this capacity.

After the armistice, the USS Los Angeles was utilized to bring American troops back home from Europe. Following the completion of her troop transport duties, the ship was decommissioned and returned to the ownership of the United States Shipping Board in 1919.

The vessel was subsequently refitted and eventually returned to civilian service under different names and operators. Details of her later commercial service and eventual fate are not consistently documented under the name USS Los Angeles. She was, however, eventually renamed Berengaria and served with Cunard Line until she was scrapped in 1938.
