Plough Lane (1912–1998)

Plough Lane was a football stadium located in the London Borough of Merton, England. It was the home ground of Wimbledon Football Club from 1912 until 1991, when the club controversially moved to Selhurst Park to groundshare with Crystal Palace. The stadium's name derived from the road on which it was situated.

Originally a greyhound racing stadium before Wimbledon F.C. became tenants, Plough Lane witnessed the club's dramatic rise through the non-league and Football League ranks, culminating in their FA Cup triumph in 1988. During Wimbledon's tenure, the stadium was known for its tight pitch and intimidating atmosphere, reflecting the team's physical and direct style of play.

The stadium's capacity varied over the years, reaching its peak at around 30,000 in the mid-20th century. By the late 1980s, capacity was reduced to approximately 10,000 due to safety regulations and ground improvements.

Following Wimbledon's departure in 1991, the stadium was eventually demolished in 1998. A housing development now occupies the site. The ground holds a significant place in English football history, representing the rise and eventual relocation of a club that defied expectations for much of its existence. A new stadium, also named Plough Lane, opened in 2020 for AFC Wimbledon, a phoenix club formed by supporters in response to the original club's move to Milton Keynes.
