Comma (rhetoric)

In rhetoric, a comma refers to a short rhetorical pause within a line of verse or prose, often used to create emphasis, rhythm, or to mimic natural speech patterns. It is a subtle tool for controlling the pace and flow of language. Unlike its grammatical counterpart, the rhetorical comma is not always marked by punctuation, and its presence is determined by the perceived effect on the listener or reader.

The skillful use of commas in rhetoric can contribute to a variety of effects. They can highlight key words or phrases, build suspense by briefly delaying a crucial element of the sentence, or create a sense of intimacy and informality. While closely related to the grammatical comma, the rhetorical comma differs in its purpose. The grammatical comma serves primarily to ensure clarity and proper sentence structure. In some cases, a writer might strategically omit a grammatical comma in favor of a more rapid pace, or insert a comma for rhetorical emphasis, even if grammatically unconventional.
