Oakwood Cemetery (Richmond, Virginia)
Oakwood Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in Richmond, Virginia. Established in 1854, it served as a burial ground primarily for Confederate soldiers and indigent citizens. Situated east of downtown Richmond, the cemetery spans approximately 64 acres.
During the American Civil War, Oakwood Cemetery became a major burial site for Confederate soldiers who died in Richmond-area hospitals. Large sections of the cemetery are dedicated to their remains, including the "Confederate Section," which contains the graves of over 17,000 soldiers. In addition to Confederate soldiers, Oakwood also contains the remains of civilians, including many African Americans, both enslaved and free, who were buried in segregated sections.
The cemetery is administered by the City of Richmond. Significant monuments and memorials within Oakwood include the Confederate Memorial Chapel and various markers honoring individual soldiers and units.
